2021 No. 1 overall prospect Jonathan Kuminga has trimmed his list down to five, and the Kentucky Wildcats made the cut.

This afternoon, Kuminga — a 6-foot-8 forward out of Hillside, NJ — announced he is down to Auburn, Duke, Kentucky, Texas Tech, and the G League, cutting the likes of Memphis, Washington, Maryland, Michigan, Florida State, and Georgia from his list.

At various points in his recruitment, schools such as Duke, LSU, Auburn, Kentucky, and Texas Tech have picked up momentum and/or have been deemed favorites for the five-star forward. Over at 247Sports, Chris Fisher of the Cats Pause submitted the most recent Crystal Ball in favor of the Red Raiders.

Kuminga is the brother of Texas Tech forward Joel Ntambwe, who is expected to suit up for the first time next season after sitting out a year.

Outside of Texas Tech, the G League option is growing as a strong contender to land Kuminga.

Though Kentucky isn’t currently seen as a favorite, the No. 1 overall prospect has multiple connections with the program.

On the surface, the five-star forward is a standout at The Patrick School in New Jersey, the same school current and former Wildcats Nick Richards and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist both attended. Calipari, who has a home in New Jersey and has developed deep connections in the state, has also signed other prospects out of the Garden State such as Karl-Anthony Towns, Dakari Johnson, Isaiah Briscoe, Kahlil Whitney, and Lance Ware.

This year alone, Kuminga attended the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden as a guest of Kentucky, with the 6-foot-8 forward seen shaking hands with Wall in the stands.

After the game, Kuminga was seen near the UK locker room in the same frame as wall, with the prized five-star prospect facing away from the camera in the navy blue jacket.

Could John Calipari and the UK coaching staff come in and pull off the major surprise?
